ASCA Nationals this year was a blast for Zach and I. Last year he wasn't old enough to do
anything except for breed. But this year he was entered in agility the entire week as well. For
his first time running 2-4 runs a day, for 5 days he did great! He woke up every morning up and
ready for the new day and gave it his all. He earned his Novice Gamblers title, earned 1 leg
towards his Novice Jumpers and 1.5 legs towards his Novice Regular title.
We didn't make it to the breed ring this year due to conflicts with the agility ring but that's ok.
I was very proud of his focus and drive, having girls in heat around all week and all the
sights, sounds and smells for an intact boy not quite two years old.
The past two years since Zach came to live with us has been quite an adventure. Never a dull moment that's for sure.
At first it was tough to get Zach into wanting to play and work with me, being the social butterfly he is, he thought
classes were for socializing with the other dogs. And he loves our trainers, sometimes a little bit more than they love
him. Or his knack of jumping up and catching you in the nose with his big wet tongue <G>.
But I persevered and he has been molded into a wonderful little worker. He doesn't have the natural talent for agility
as Gwen does, or the love of rally like Codi but he brings his own personality to the mix.

Like at his debut in rally in November of 2007. Working the entire course with me Zach stayed right in heel position
but kept his nose glued to the ground almost the entire time. It felt like I had a bloodhound on the other end of the
leash! I had to give a few extra commands and thought for sure we wouldn't qualify. Suprisingly enough not only did
we qualify for two legs, but he placed! Apparently it didn't look as horrible as it felt. We finished up this year in
December in rally earning our Level 1 title. It was like having a completely different dog on the end of the leash. He
certainly has developed a great working drive.

His agility debut was much better especially as it was in June 2007, and he gets hot easily. But he did wonderful. We
entered 4 classes, and he qualified 3 out of 4 and even placed again! What he lacks in raw talent, he more than
makes up for in enthusiasm.

Summer 2007 brought a new activity for Zach, swimming with mom! He loves to swim after
toys in the water, especially when it involves racing another four legged friend to see who
gets to the toys first. But swimming with me was a little different. Turns out Zach was not so
sure what to do with me in the water with him face to face <g>. We began the summer by
taking some workshops to give him more confidence in the water with me, and ended the
summer by earning our Team Swim Certificate, Novice 60' Retrieve, and Novice Handler Tow.
Turns out what he likes even better than retrieving toys is towing! He had a blast towing me to
shore and even was pulling his buddy Takoda to shore while she was sunning herself on the
ski tube. He even enjoyed sunning himself on the tube but would really like to figure out how
he can lay on the tube and tow himself in at the same time!
